A bill proposed to block gambling sites from Israelis

27th February, 2008

MK Amnon Cohen of the ultra-Orthodox Shas party presented a bill yesterday at the Knesset plenum, which legally forces every internet provider to automatically block any site with gambling, sex or violence content from all consumers unless they explicitly request their access to those sites.

The bill is the response to the Shas’s recent threats to leave the coalition. Nevertheless, Economic Affairs Committee legal adviser expressed his concerns about supporting the Cohen’s bill in the High Court of Justice. He feels that Communications Minister Ariel Atias’s (Shas) refusal to reveal a list of sites for the committee’s approval is going to put the bill in a very compromising position.
