A host of casinos but nowhere to gamble

14th November, 2007

The casinos in Seoul are for foreigners only. When North Koreans visited South Korea for a Prime Ministers meeting, they were also unable to attend the casinos. "If a North Korean comes to our casino, we can show them around as a courtesy, but they are prohibited from gambling. They are subject to the same rules as South Koreans."

Although divided for more than sixty years both governments claim to be the rightful rulers of both North and South Korea. Relations are strained between the two, but recent talks have bene encouraging.

North Korea is a communist state and also has casinos in some of its top hotels. Like South Korea, they too are only available for use by foreigners.

There is one casino, in a remote mining village in South Korea that allows locals to gamble.
