Another Judge Rules in Favour of Poker
26th February, 2009
The long debate on whether poker is a game of skill or luck has found its self back in an American court room.
Participants in an illegal poker game were arrested back in 2006 after a raid by police. Charged with organising a gambling for profit operation, the defendants claimed that the games were in fact casual among friends.
Larry Duffy, the Mount Pleasant Municipal Judge, concluded that the game of poker is one of skill and not luck, but still found the defendants guilty under the 1802 law.
Judge Duffy said that the law stated all games where dice or cards where used were classed as gambling, but he did not have enough clarification from higher courts or law makers to determine whether his opinion made a difference to the 200 year old law.
John Pappas, from Poker Players Alliance said, “We are humbled by Judge Duffy’s thoughtful decision and applaud the effort put forth by the legal team defending these poker players.”
