Antigua fights US gambling law today
17th January, 2008
Errot Cort, Antigua and Barbuda’s finance minister has planned to discuss the disagreement about internet gambling with the US Trade Representative today.
He left last night to meet Susan Schwab, the US official, for the negotiations which will be taking place today.
We believe this matter can be settled in an amicable way because we enjoy an excellent relationship with the United States," said Mr. Cort. "I am therefore hopeful (we can) come to some broad understanding in terms of settlement."
Prior to that World Trade Organisation (WTO) has already approved the island officials to target U.S. services, copyrights and trademarks concerning U.S. online betting ban.
Antigua requested $3.4. billion to impose in annual trade sanctions, but WTO only allowed $21 million.
The island is trying to prove that United States wants to kill its gambling industry by introduction of the ban, which stopped Americans from betting online with foreign gambling operators.
