Australia lift e-gaming ban – growth set to increase

Since the Australian government’s independent advisory body recommended lifting the country’s eight year old gambling ban, the market looks set for considerable expansion.

According to an article at EGR Magazine, the 2001 Interactive Gambling Act was established in 2001 and last week The Productivity Commission recommended that the

Australian Government lift this act, allowing for poker and casino products to be targeted towards Australian residents.

The IGA reached its conclusion after reporting that ‘The long-run consequence of prohibition may be higher problem gambling risks and a loss of commercial opportunities and tax revenue in Australia’

The deputy managing director of Centrebet, Michael McRitchie commented saying that the switch to regulated online gaming means that there is a win-win situation for stakeholders in the Australian market.

The conclusion was drawn after taking into consideration submissions from over 260 organizations from the sports book, sports club and sports representative body’s.
