Australian Judgement Win for Betfair
1st April, 2008
Betfair, a leading sportsbetting provider, have won a groundbreaking judgement in the Australian High Court.
The betting exchange, licensed in Tasmania, won a challenge against Western Australian laws that, until now, banned residents from using their products. It has now been ruled that the legislation contravened section 92 of the constitution.
The decision to change the legislation was a unanimous one and, following it, Tote's operations in Queensland, Unitab, have begun to consider a move into the Western market to set up rival competition. They said "if it looks like something the public embraces we’ll set up our own service similar to Betfair." They will do this to try to prevent any of their custom or revenue changing hands and going to Betfair.
