Betfair wage war on Dutch Government
18th May, 2009
Betfair are one of the worlds leading online betting exchanges, offering their users the chance to bet against each other in a wide variety of games. The Dutch government however, were unhappy with the company operating in their country and sent a letter to banks asking them not to process payments from players on the site.
Betfair however claim they are fully licensed and should be allowed to operate in Holland.
Managing director, Mark Davies said, 'This is a desperate move by the Dutch government to prevent a company that is fully licensed and regulated in jurisdictions across Europe from being accessed by residents in The Netherlands.”
Holland was a strong supporter of a single legislative framework for the whole of Europe, however Betfair claim they are going against this by attempting to stop them operating.
They could receive millions in compensation if they are successful in court and managers are confident they have a very strong case. Betfair also operate a poker, casino financial and arcade sites.
