Casino bill for Texas
26th February, 2009
Two lawmakers are trying to push for a new legislation that will allow casinos to be opened in Texas.
Senators John Carona (Republican) and Rodney Ellis (Democrat) announced their casino proposal on Tuesday, in which they called for up to 12 casinos to be opened.
As it stands, at the moment any Texan that wants to gamble must travel out of the state in order to do so. This is not only inconvenient for players, but also takes money out of Texas and contributes to the economy of another state.
Senator Ellis said, “Texans are already gaming. They're going to continue to do so. I say let's regulate it and let's tax it and let's use the money to pay for public schools and highways and other needy programs in the great state of Texas,"
However, the bill to open casinos in Texas has been met by opposition, namely the Baptist Church and the social conservatives. This is not the first time that senators have tried to push such a bill, but maybe this attempt will prove to be more successful.
Out of state casinos are not keen on the idea of Texas opening up casinos either, as this would mean more competition in a difficult economic climate.
