Chinese teenagers involved in illegal betting
25th February, 2009
It has been reported that over 100 students have been expelled from an exclusive Chinese boarding school for their involvement in an illegal gambling ring. Three of the students at the school are said to have accumulated a debt of more than a million yuan (£100,000) between them.
Despite gambling being illegal in China, the authorities have struggled to crack down on online gaming and informal betting rings. This is the second case of illegal gambling to emerge from China in recent weeks- earlier this month 20 people were arrested for being involved in a £690million online gambling ring.
It is said that the students bet heavily on America basketball games.
One student said, “We sent text messages to the bookmaker with our bets. We didn't have to pay cash upfront”
Book makers hired students from the school to act as agent, collecting money and handing back winnings. The students involved were said to be between 16 and 17 years old.
