Church of England Back Decision Against Super Casino

10th March, 2008

The UK Government's decision not to license a regional super casino has been welcomed by the Church of England.

Following the decision not to allow construction of the Las Vegas style casino, spoke persons for the Church of England have pledged their support and have also been influential in encouraging MP Andy Burnham, the Culture Secretary, to issue warnings to the industry regarding the enforcement of a statutory levy to fund research and treatments for problem gambling.

Dr Philip Giddings, chairman of the Church’s Mission and Public Affairs Council said "The Culture Secretary is exactly right when he says it is unacceptable that only 360 out of 3,800 licensed operators have contributed to the Responsibility in Gambling Trust" continuing to say that the Governement has "eased restrictions on their industry" and finishing by saying that "Mr Burnham has every reason to put the funding on a statutory basis".

With the full support and backing from the Church of England the Government's decision not to license a supercasino is unlikely to change now or for the foreseeable future.
