Compulsive Gambler Sues Seven Casinos

10th March, 2008

Seven separate casinos in the United States are being sued over claims of failing in their 'duty of care'.

37 year old ex-lawyer Arelia Margarita Taveras is suing seven casinos after she went to Atlantic City and lost £500,000 on casino tables.

On arrival she started gambling at tables, and soon after she began receiving treatment reserved for high-rollers. She managed to play for four or five days without sleeping.

She says they failed to keep to their duty of care, noticing that she was a problem gambler. In her words: "They knew I was going for days without eating or sleeping... I would pass out at the tables. They had a duty of care to me. Nobody in their right mind would gamble for four or five straight days without sleeping."

Six of the casinos being sued are in Atalntic City - the Resorts, Trump Plaza, Trump Taj Mahal Casino, Tropicana, Showboat Casino and Bally's - the other one is in Las Vegas - the MGM Grand.

All seven claim innocence.

The case has been brought up just days after a similar case in the UK, where gambler Graham Calvert is attempting to sue William Hill for £2million.
