Compulsive Gambler loses Court Case
18th December, 2008
The Daily Telegraph reported on how a compulsive gambler had lost his case against a betting operator.
Graham Calvert, 29, by his own admission was a compulsive gambler , after having lost an extremely large amount of money he opted to sue the betting operator with whom he had lost the money for the bookie’s lack in ‘duty of care’.
However Mr Calvert lost this case and now has lost his appeal against the betting operator William Hill.
Mr Calvert a greyhound trainer from Houghton-le-Spring. Tyne and Wear, claimed that William Hill did not stop him from wagering his money although he had asked them to do so by barring him.
According to William Hill Mr Calvert became successful with his greyhound betting and turned his attention to golf betting £347,000 on the Ryder Cup in 2006, only to lose the lot when USA were beaten.
In his appeal the judge upheld the high court decision and was found in have of William Hill, stating that “had William Hill barred Mr Calvert, he would have ruined himself anyway.”
