F1 Gatecrash punishment is thought to be too lenient

Reports from EGR magazine reveals that the European Sports Security Association (ESSA) has decided to investigate and correct rules and regulations to avoid future ‘lenient’ punishments given, like the one handed to Renault regarding the F1 Crashgate.

The punishment given to the F1 team has been criticised by several experts and the ESSA has noted that it is essential that something is implemented to control and moderate the punishments so that appropriate penalties for corruption can be applied in the future.

A spokesman from ESSA explained, “It’s in the interest of all sports bodies to promote their own sports and engage in damage limitation when a scandal breaks. This means that they often don’t apply the rules as rigorously enough as they could or should, or hand down the tough penalties that would act as effective deterrents. This latest episode is a prime example.”

It seems that those in the industry fear that if tough penalties are not enforced, it does not discourage the same or similar behaviour happening again as others will learn from this and realise they can get away with it. It seems that it could be a long process, but hopefully once an independent global body is in place the tackle on corruption can begin and the aim to make fairer sports for future enjoyment will be achieved.
