Tribe go ahead with casino plans

Despite the US Supreme Court ruling that the casino plans in Allegan County could not go ahead, the Tribe are determined to carry out its plans.

The US Supreme Court ruled that the federal government must have recognized tribes by 1934. The Gun Lake Band of Pottawatomi Indians was only recognized in 1998 and therefore the lands are now in trust.

A tribal spokesperson refused to comment but did mention that the court’s decision would not affect the tribe’s plans. “We're looking into options to see if there is a way to get it out of trust.”

The tribe plans to build a casino on 147 acres. The 190,000 square foot casino will have 2,000 slot machines and 75 gaming tables.
