Man v. Machine: The Second Poker Showdown
17th June, 2008
A poker-playing machine, Polaris 2, is set to take on poker professionals representing Stoxpoker in Las Vegas during the Gaming Life Expo this July.
Polaris, developed by the University of Alberta’s Computer Poker Research Group, is a series of computer programs capable of beating most amateur poker players and giving professionals a run for their money.
The Man v. Machine match is scheduled for 3-6th July at the Rio Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, which will be the second time Polaris has been put to the test by poker professionals. Last year poker pros Phil Laak and Ali Eslami managed to defeat Polaris, but only with a marginal victory – one win, two losses and one tie for Polaris.
“Against the current AI in Polaris 2, the average poker player would be completely dominated,” said Bryce Paradis, lead poker coach with Stoxpoker.com. “The Polaris 2 team has made incredible improvements since the match last year. The most powerful change is that the AI will now learn from and adapt to its opponents’ play as the match progresses. This year’s Man vs. Machine match is going to push our team to their limit.”
Poker professionals representing Stoxpoker.com at this year’s match will be Nick Grudzien, IJay Palansky and Matt Hawrilenko - additional pros will be announced during the weeks leading up to the event.
“My goal will be to stay aggressive and to avoid tendencies that can be exploited,” said Grudzien.
