30th July, 2008

New casino opening in summer 2009 The FireKeepers Casino is set to open in the summer of 2009, according to an announcement made by the Nottawaseppi Huron Band of Potawatomi. The casino will be located on Michigan Avenue off of Interstate 94, near exit 104.

Construction began 7 May, 2008 and has continued without a hitch, which means the casino should be ready as scheduled.

“The Tribe is very pleased with the progress that we are making in the construction of FireKeepers Casino,” said Laura Spur, Nottawaseppi Huron Band of Potawatomi Tribal Chairperson. “We have waited a long time to bring economic development and jobs to not only tribal members but also to the greater Calhoun County region.”

Building of the FireKeepers casino looks to be on track for the summer 2009 opening with its construction being led by Clark Construction Company. The cost of the construction has been estimated to be about $300 million.

“FireKeepers Casino will be an outstanding venue for gaming patrons located halfway between Detroit and Chicago, along the I-94 corridor,” said R. Bruce McKee, casino general manager. “We look forward to offering a first class entertainment experience and to bringing new and exciting dining options to the greater Battle Creek region.”

The new casino is expected to create about 2,200 jobs, with 1,500 being permanent jobs, in the 236,000 square-foot space. The casino plans to begin hiring for most of its permanent casino positions during the early part of next year.

“FireKeepers Casino will be seeking to hire employees who are outgoing, friendly and customer service oriented,” said McKee. “The casino will also be looking for local vendors to provide food and beverages, meets produce, bakery goods, and paper products. We will be exploring relationships with businesses.”
