Online Bookies celebrate the National

The Grand National took place on Saturday and was won by outsider Mon Mome who stormed to victory at Antriee. Millions around the country placed bets, but few would have backed the eventual winner who was priced at a huge 100/1.

Favorite, My Will, finished 3rd and last years winner Comply or Die finished in second. It was jockey, Liam Treadwell's first National and is certainly a name to look out for in the future.

Trained by Venetia Williams, Mon Mome took an outside line in the final stages which allowed him to race to the front alongside Comply or Die. Being 8 pounds lighter than last years winner, Mon Mome pulled out ahead and finished the race way ahead of the chasing pack.

William commented after the race, "How can you ever expect that in a race like this? "It was just unbelievable, the owner was watching the wrong horse for the first part of the race and she thought it was out the back."

Bookies will also be celebrating with one of the outsiders winning. At 100/1 most decided to go for horses with shorter odds benefiting bookies when none of the favourites won.

David Hood, William Hill spokesman, said at the weekend: "This is definitely a bonanza day for the bookies.

He went onto add, "Such is the enormity of the Grand National that the first half-year profit-and-loss can rest on the result of this one race, and we could not have written a better script for a winner."
