Online casinos in Japan
13th February, 2009
Japan is strict on gambling, in fact, the only things that are not illegal in Japan are horse racing and the lottery- neither of which generate much revenue. Presently, there are no land based nor online casinos in Japan, but that could be about to change.
The government, led by the Liberal Democratic Party, has met with some of the world’s largest online gaming operators to discuss the idea of casinos in Japan. It is reported that the Japanese government hope to open up a heavily regulated online and offline casino market sometime after 2010.
Why Japan?
Firstly, Japan has the highest gross domestic product in Asia. In fact, the gross domestic product per capita of Japan is said to exceed that of the USA. Furthermore, the population in Japan is said to be estimated at over 128 million, making Japan potentially very lucrative for online gaming operators.
