PPA shows support for Menendez
8th October, 2008
Senator Robert Menendez has been supported by the Poker Players Alliance. Menendez plans to introduce a piece of legislation which will legalize and regulate the online poker industry.
The bill, which will be called 'The internet Skill and Game Licensing and Control Act', and will provide a legal framework for allowing online gambling games to be played in the US, which involve skill.
Currently online poker is not allowed in the US even though the game is played by millions. The Poker Players alliance when the law was enforced a few years ago and has grown in numbers to over a million, demonstrating the support for legal online gaming.
Currently many players have resorted to playing online at European sites, however this act is strongly supported by most online gamers and industry operators.
Former Senator Alfonse D’Amato, Chairman for the PPA said, 'This action by Senator Menendez is yet another example that prohibitions on Internet gambling and specifically poker will not work to protect consumers,'
'On behalf of the members of the PPA and online poker players nationwide, I would like to thank Senator Menendez on his leadership on this important issue,” said D’Amato.
'The PPA has long advocated for thoughtful and effective licensing and regulation of online poker as a means to protect vulnerable communities such as children and compulsive gamblers and provide appropriate controls to thwart consumer fraud and abuse. Senator Menendez's legislation is the right vehicle to achieve those goals.'
