With a four-month-old baby and having incurred personal losses in gold and mining stokes, one would think that getting into the business of financial spread-betting, could wait for another time.
However Victor Chandler’s guiding philosophy is that there is never a bad time to accept a bet, or to place one, especially as the volatile market place would suggest a promising return on spread-betting.
Mr Chandler said, “I would have been more worried if we had launched in the latter quarter of last year when most of us who play the market had burned our fingers.”
According to the Financial Times today bears witness to the launch of Victor Chandler Financials, which will provide the UK portion of Mr Chandler’s 1.7m global clients with access to a multiple of financial market products. Victor Chandler Financials is the birth of a joint venture with Dublin (IRE) based spread-betting company Worldspreads.
Having taken over the business after the death of his father in 1974, the same business started by his grandfather in 1946, many regard Mr Chandler as one of the last of ‘gentlemen bookmakers’.
His lighting quick mind has ensured that he has not only been aware of changes in how punters bet and what they want to be on but also has led the industry in reform.
He long before realised that battings future was not in racing, as many other thought, or in the UK, but instead in football and Asia. Stating “The reason why the Premier League and all the big football leagues are so popular in Asia is there is no question about football’s integrity.”
Mr Chandler has even reported plans to unveil spread-betting in Asia, with a China launch set for later in the year, and is currently in talks with European operators.
