Police investigate Hawicks shock defeat by Huntly
30th September, 2009

There has been a lot in the news over the last couple of days about the thrashing that took place at the weekend. The Scottish Football Association are beginning to investigate the Hawick Royal Albert's 7-0 defeat to Huntley and the players were questioned in training on Tuesday night after suspicion that the game had been fixed and irregular betting.
Bookies revealed that several bets, some as long as 50-1, were placed on predicting the exact scoreline and more specifically, that Hawick would concede a penalty in the first half of the game, and at 22 minutes into the game this is exactly what happened. After this was announced Lothian and Borders Police confirmed that they would investigate further and both the SFA and the Borders club have agreed to co-operate fully with the investigation. There will also be a full investigation by the club, even thought the club didn’t know anything about it and have refused to make a statement at present.
Bookies are also contributing to the research by looking back at betting patterns for the game to see if there are any extreme differences, but it must be noted that bookies would not normally take bets worth thousands of pounds on early round matches such as this game so it if any larget bets were made it would be simple to see that there was a difference in betting behaviour on this match.
The SFA are hoping that the allegations will not be true, but understand that it would be terrible and it is seen as a serious issue at all levels and has reassured the public that he will take appropriate action against any club that is found guilty.
