Sweden May Ban Foreign Gambling Sites
6th April, 2009
Online Gambling in Scandinavian countries is relatively wide spread, with some of the highest rates of online gambling countries like Sweden and Norway.
It seems that online gambling is to be in the spot light again, after reports have suggested that the Swedish government intend to censor the internet in order to protect it’s monopoly on gambling.
Currently in Sweden, state owned sites have the vast majority on the online gambling market share, although recent years has seen more and more brands and companies trying to open the market up to competition.
Despite this, the Swedish government commissioned gambling report that was recently released, had proposals that would see Swedes banned from accessing foreign online casino and pokers sites .
The Swedish newspaper, Aftonbladet, reportedly said that the proposal, has been met with criticism as both Swedish internet service providers and authorities have condemned the move. They claim that under current Swedish law it is not illegal to visit or play at these site’s, and a ban would limit individuals freedom.
Wednesday is the deadline for the consultative body to respond to the government report. Until this time they were not willing to make any comments.
