Tennis star suspended

12th November, 2007

Di Mauro was banned under the atp's policy which does not tolerate "players, associates or staff gambling on tennis".

In addition to this suspension Di Mauro also received a $60K fine.

Di Mauro is ranked 124 in the world apparently got off lightly as the maximum penalty could have been a three year ban from the game. The ATP is also calling for stiffer sactions for rule breaking. They said they had asked for the maximum penalty to be imposed, however the Officer at the Anti Corruption Hearing has to act based on a case by case basis and he did not see that a maximum three year ban fitted this particular incident.

There was no evidence that Di Mauro bet on or took part in any match fixing. He was found to be guilty of betting on other matches between November 2006 and June 2007.

The 30 year old will be allowed to resume competitive matches in August of next year meaning he will miss out on the US Open and Wimbledon.
