US Representative would allow Online Gambling
14th April, 2009
The US online gaming industry has had a tough few years since the Internet Gambling Regulation act of April 2007. Since then it has been illegal for players to deposit or transfer money to gaming sites.
This has resulted in thousands of gamers deciding to play on foreign sites or illegal unregulated sites within the US. The American Federal government have lost billions in taxes, which would have been generated if a appropriate legal framework had been put in place.
However the push for legalizing and regulating the industry is now stronger than ever. Online Poker is especially popular in the US and the PPA (Poker Players Alliance) have been campaigning for the government to amended the current act.
US Representative Barney Frank recently announced that he would introduce legislation later this month. The Capitol Hill newspaper read, “His legislation would regulate the practice as well as tax it, providing new revenues for the Federal Government.”
This has been opposed by several sporting associations as well as numerous religious groups.
