WSOP Expect Large Number of Players

The 2009 World Series of Poker is just over three weeks away, and will see thousands of players from across the globe contending for millions of dollars in prize money over the six weeks.

Now, in its 40th year, the WSOP has become one of the most prestigious events in the poker calendar, with both professionals and amateurs competing side by side.

Despite the economic slump hitting Las Vegas casinos relatively hard, WSOP organizers believe the event will still see a big turnout. Last year there were more than 58,700 entries with more than $180 million paid out in prize money.

Jeffrey Pollack, commissioner of the WSOP said, "We're aware of what is happening with the global economy and we're sensitive to it. We have an obligation to create an annual festival and improve every aspect of the tournament that we can. We have to ensure that whoever shows up is given the best possible experience."

The WSOP is due to start on May 26th at the Rio in Las Vegas, with two new tournaments beginning on May 28th and 30th. The first will be a $40,000 buy-in, no limit hold’em tournament, while the second will be a $1,000 buy-in, no limit hold’em event, which is expected to attract a field of around 6,000 players.

A special Champions Invitational event will also feature this year, with all 27 living WSOP champions playing for the title of Champions Champion. Mr Pollack also added, "Whether you're a first-time player or a seasoned pro, we have something for you,"
