WSOP: Nine left at the World Series of Poker Main Event
16th July, 2008
We won’t find out who the winner of this year’s World Series of Poker Main Event is until November, but I’m sure we’ll hear plenty about the nine players that remain in the tournament.
After outlasting an enormous field of 6,844 players, these nine players have a chance to be a part of poker history and take home a little more than $9.1 million and a gold bracelet for their efforts. No matter who it is, they will surely be a remembered face.
In talking about how he got so deep in this tournament, finding himself at the final table of the most prestigious poker event in the world, Ylon Schwartz explains that he played a pretty conservative game.
“Pretty much just picking up small pots,” said Ylon Schwartz, one of the final nine at the WSOP Main Event. “I think I had one huge pot and basically just waited for people to make mistakes. And you know, at the World Series you’ve got a lot of novices, so they’re bound to overvalue what they have. That happened a lot for me, so I was able to exploit that.”
The final nine have all been paid ninth-place money, $900,670, with the rest coming after the final table is played out 9-10 November at the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino, which has a 1,500-seat theatre. The time between now and then will be used to get to know the final nine.
“The winner of the World Series of Poker Main Event has always become an instant celebrity,” said Jeffrey Pollack, WSOP commissioner. “This year, all nine players who make the final table will become household names – and are guaranteed life-changing prize money to go with their fame and place in poker history.”
