WSOP: Woo wins World Series of Poker Bracelet

24th June, 2008

David Woo, poker professional, defeated a sizable field in World Series of Poker Event 39, $1,500 No Limit Hold’em tournament, to take home a WSOP Bracelet and $631,550.

The tournament attracted 2,720 players, the largest three-day event at this year’s WSOP, which was actually played out over four days. The prize pool was $3,712,800 and paid out 270 players.

Thom Werthmann was chip leader going into the final table and was the man to beat, but it was Woo who ended up on top.

“The bracelet is a huge validation,” Woo said. “To win it is definitely a good feeling. To win most of the time you have to suck out several times, but fortune smiled on me.”

Woo took out two players in one hand at the final table, which was the first time at this year’s WSOP. He hit a straight on the flop with A-K in his hand and had to dodge a Jack, Queen and running Kings or tens. His hand held up and two players were knocked off the final table.

“I’m just hoping right there somebody makes a move preflop and I can come over the top,” Woo said. “As it turns out, everybody limped; I flopped the stone cold nuts and scared for my life because I know people have tremendous draws.”

This win makes 31 for professionals, 6 for amateurs and 2 for semi-professionals, which means that this year is truly one for the pros.
