WSOP: polygraph examiner wins World Series of Poker Bracelet
26th June, 2008
Dan Lacourse, former polygraph examiner, won his first World Series of Poker Bracelet in Event 42, $1,000 No Limit Hold’em Seniors World Championship.
After defeating a field of 2,217 players, which included some of the most legendary to ever play the game, Lacourse took home $368,759 for his efforts at the WSOP.
Lacourse was a member of the Lucas County Deputy Sheriff’s Department for 27 years, which was where he spent five years working as a polygraph examiner in Toledo, OH.
“Having that experience as a polygraph examiner certainly helped in winning this event,” Lacourse said. “As a polygraph examiner you learn about timing, speed and reactions. At this tournament you can watch players as they get tired, their reactions start changing, they think too much in the beginning of the game, but as they get tired they tend not to think as much. “You learn that an initial reaction occurs within the first three seconds and that is what I gauge a player by.”
When the action got down to heads up, the two players left were Lacourse and Dale Eberle, a retired firefighter from Akron, OH. So it was down to two men from Ohio, one a former policeman, the other a former fireman. Also, the two had reportedly developed a bond throughout the tournament, talking about retirement and sharing life stories.
“After talking with Dale when we were comparing retirement systems and the like we thought maybe it would be great if we ended up heads-up against each other, it would be the best thing in the world, I couldn’t ask for anything more,” Lacourse said.
However, heads up play didn’t last very long. In the second hand Lacourse flopped trip nines and Eberle had no other play but to call his all in with a pair of kings.
