William Hill Vs Gambling Addict: The Verdict
14th March, 2008
Graham Calvert, a former greyhound trainer filed a lawsuit against William Hill over a month ago on negligence charges.
William Hill were accused of, after his self-exclusion, taking large bets mainly over the telephone. He says they failed in their “duty of care”. He then added charges of personal injury to the case claiming that they were the cause of his marriage’s decline, the loss of his livelihood and his damaged health.
Mr Calvert, 28, felt he was eligible for compensation amounting to over £2million. The high court Judge, Mr Justice Briggs, agreed that the betting firm had failed in their duty of care by not taking reasonable steps to prevent Mr Calvert from betting but then followed that his pathological gambling “would still probably have led to his financial ruin.”
Graham Calvert lost his case, getting no money back off William Hill. On top of the failed case he was ordered to pay William Hill £336,000 to cover their legal fees.
