William Hill customer wins big on National
8th April, 2009
The Grand National is referred to by many as the peoples race, but also notoriously difficult to predict. Million's placed bets on Saturday afternoon and the eventual winner was 100/1 outsider Mon Mome.
Few had back this horse, but those who did would have reaped the benefits of the long odds. One lucky William Hill punter bet £30 on three horse each way including the winner to claim a massive £65,000 win.
Jason Darmody, from Swindon, placed a combined bet which had the odds of 11,848-to-one at his local William Hill bookmakers.
A delighted Darmody said, "It seemed like an age before it flashed on the screen and I kept looking at my ticket."
He went onto add, "I knew I had the winner but I didn't know who came second and third." "I stood in the queue at the bookies and when I got to the front the man said 'this is really really big""
Overall bookies were very happy with the result which saw them take millions of losing bets.
